Welcome to The Woodward, an independent boutique hotel offering nine one-of-a-kind rooms in the heart of historic downtown Macon.
At The Woodward, you’re among avenues lined with cherry blossom trees and church spires, and you're just steps away from downtown Macon's 53 restaurants, 31 bars and venues, 35 retailers, 7 art galleries, 9 museums and attractions, 30 annual festivals.
Each room is a one-of-a-kind gem, but they all welcome you to unwind with luxe linens, plush mattresses, designer-tiled ensuite bathrooms, custom upholstery, cozy reading chairs, and creature comforts like coffee makers, white noise machines, and personal heat and air conditioning.
Our contactless check-in and check-out (think vacation rental with an access code) offers guests unparalleled privacy, and since we don’t have a front desk, there’s no waiting in line or losing your keycard. There is no public entrance, but the bar is open to the public beginning at 5 PM Monday-Saturday.
Owned, designed, and staffed by good people who call Macon home, we created The Woodward to reflect our values: strengthening our community, honoring the arts and history, and sharing our incredible hometown. When you choose to stay in one of our nine rooms or have a drink at the bar, you're supporting a local business and fueling the growth of our small Southern city.
The Woodward is named after our proprietor’s grandfather, Dr. Benjamin Woodward Griffith, Jr.: a celebrated professor of English, folklorist, and WWII Navy veteran, and writer. In his honor, we feature nods to Southern literature (and great books!) in every room and in our craft cocktail bar, Quill.
Come and go as you please. Talk to no one or everyone. Everyone on staff is a local. If you decide to stop for a chat, we're happy to tell you all our favorite local hangouts.
We offer nine rooms, each as lovely and individual as the last. They all have a traditional hotel room layout: king- or queen-sized upholstered beds; private, sparkling ensuite bathrooms, nightstands with charging outlets; flat-screen TVs; reading chair; writing desk; iron and ironing board; coffee maker; luxury Matouk sheets (so soft and breathable!); personal A/C and heat; and fast Wifi.
Every room offers a different view, whether it’s the shops, greenspace, and historic church spires across Second Street -- or the antique brick and gabled skylights of Mulberry Street Lane, the alley we share with six local restaurants. With our 19th-century building’s huge picture windows and towering ceilings, even our coziest rooms feel spacious. We especially love the antique pressed-tin ceiling tiles and dormant fireplaces in many of the rooms.
We are right in the heart of downtown and our bar and rooftop patio are open to the public, so guests can expect some background noise of Macon city life.
Our two junior queens are more modest in size and have smaller windows -- perfect for people who like to sleep where it’s shady and cool. We have one double queen room, one wheelchair-accessible king room with gorgeous alcoves, and five king-sized rooms, two of which have balconies that overlook the rooftop patio.
We hope you’ll enjoy these beautiful spaces, and that they’ll be a great place to hang your hat while you explore everything Macon has to offer.
“I learned from the age of two or three that any room in our house, at any time of day, was there to read in, or be read to.”
― Eudora Welty
Quill is a cozy craft cocktail bar tucked behind The Woodward on Mulberry Street Lane. With its marble bar, wood ceiling, leather, tweed, and velvet seating, the ground-floor interior is perfect for a quiet conversation. Our rooftop patio provides a breezy escape where you and your mint julep can soak up some sunshine while the sparrows wheel between brick chimneys. Our cocktails are inspired by books and history, whether it's an author's favorite classic or one of our creative signatures. We also offer a small but carefully curated selection of wine, bottled beer, and coffees.
“You see, baby, after a glass or two of wine, I’m inclined to extravagance.”
― Tennessee Williams
